Built in 1892, overlooking the Strait of Canso, this Methodist church once served the farming community of Sunnyside.

Employment with the railroad and shipyard eventually caused relocation to the village of Point Tupper. Ever resourceful, the Sunnyside people brought their church, and some of their houses, with them!

Closure of many rural churches in the 1960s and voluntary government relocation of Point Tupper people during industrial development in the 1970s, left the little church vacant and forlorn.

But help was at hand. In 1990, a group of dedicated people formed the Point Tupper Heritage Association and restoration began. So authentic was the work and so important was its significance as a memorial to a once vibrant village, the former church was designated a Municipal Heritage Building by the County of Richmond.

Today it houses a summer museum dedicated to former area residents and is hot to a number of celebrations throughout the year.
